Electricity generation using concentrated solar power
Construction and operation of electricity generation facilities that produce electricity using concentrated solar power (CSP) technology.
Substantial Contribution to Climate Change Mitigation
The activity generates electricity using concentrated solar power (CSP) technology. Life-cycle GHG emissions from the generation of electricity from concentrated solar power are lower than 100 gCO2e/kWh, calculated in accordance with the methodology set out in Recommendation 2013/179/EU or, alternatively, using ISO 14067:2018 or ISO 14064-1:2018.
CSP systems use mirrors or lenses to concentrate sunlight onto receivers that collect solar energy and convert it to heat, which can then be used to produce electricity via a steam turbine. The facility must demonstrate compliance with the emissions threshold through an independently verified life-cycle assessment covering manufacturing, transport, installation, operation, and decommissioning phases.
DNSH: Climate Change Adaptation
The activity complies with the criteria set out in Appendix A of the Delegated Act. A climate risk and vulnerability assessment has been carried out to identify material physical climate risks over the expected lifetime of the facility, and appropriate adaptation solutions have been implemented to reduce identified risks.
DNSH: Water and Marine Resources
The activity does not lead to the deterioration of the good status of bodies of water and complies with Directive 2000/60/EC. For CSP facilities using wet cooling, water consumption and withdrawal are minimised by adopting dry or hybrid cooling systems where technically feasible, particularly in areas of water stress as identified under the Water Framework Directive.
DNSH: Circular Economy
The activity assesses the availability of and, where feasible, adopts techniques that support reuse and recycling of components, including mirrors, heat transfer fluids, and molten salt storage media. A waste management plan is in place at both construction and end-of-life stages ensuring proper handling and recycling of materials.
DNSH: Pollution Prevention
The activity does not involve the use of substances listed in Annex I or II of Regulation (EU) 2019/1021 on persistent organic pollutants. Heat transfer fluids used are managed in accordance with REACH Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 and any emissions from the facility comply with the Industrial Emissions Directive 2010/75/EU where applicable.
