Electricity generation from ocean energy technologies
Construction and operation of electricity generation facilities that produce electricity from ocean energy including wave, tidal, and ocean thermal energy conversion.
Substantial Contribution to Climate Change Mitigation
The activity generates electricity from ocean energy technologies, including wave energy, tidal stream, tidal range, ocean thermal energy conversion, and salinity gradient power. Life-cycle GHG emissions from ocean energy generation are lower than 100 gCO2e/kWh, calculated in accordance with Recommendation 2013/179/EU or, alternatively, using ISO 14067:2018 or ISO 14064-1:2018.
The assessment covers the full life cycle of the installation, from raw material extraction and manufacturing through transport, installation, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning. Life-cycle GHG emissions are verified by an independent third party and communicated to investors and clients on demand.
DNSH: Climate Change Adaptation
The activity complies with the criteria set out in Appendix A of the Delegated Act. A climate risk and vulnerability assessment proportionate to the scale and expected lifetime of the activity has been carried out, and appropriate adaptation solutions are implemented.
DNSH: Water and Marine Resources
The activity does not lead to the deterioration of the good status or potential of bodies of water and complies with Directive 2000/60/EC and Directive 2008/56/EC (Marine Strategy Framework Directive). Environmental degradation risks related to marine water quality and marine ecosystem health are identified and addressed through mitigation measures.
DNSH: Circular Economy
The activity assesses the availability of and, where feasible, adopts techniques that support reuse and recycling at end of life. A waste management plan is in place addressing construction, operational maintenance, and decommissioning phases, ensuring high rates of material recovery.
DNSH: Pollution Prevention
The activity does not lead to releases of pollutants into the marine environment. Substances listed in Annex I or II of Regulation (EU) 2019/1021 are not used. Anti-fouling systems comply with Regulation (EC) No 782/2003 on organotin compounds and the International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-fouling Systems.
DNSH: Biodiversity and Ecosystems
An Environmental Impact Assessment has been completed in accordance with Directive 2011/92/EU. Mitigation and compensation measures are implemented to protect marine biodiversity, including fish populations, marine mammals, and seabird habitats. Installations are not located in Marine Protected Areas unless demonstrated to have no significant adverse effects.
