Storage of thermal energy
Construction and operation of facilities that store thermal energy and return it at a later time in the form of thermal energy or other useful energy.
Substantial Contribution to Climate Change Mitigation
The activity involves the construction and operation of facilities that store thermal energy and return it later as thermal energy or convert it to other useful energy outputs. Technologies include sensible heat storage (water tanks, underground thermal energy storage), latent heat storage (phase change materials), and thermochemical storage systems.
Thermal energy storage is classified as an enabling activity under Article 10(1)(i) of Regulation (EU) 2020/852, as it enables the integration of renewable thermal energy and waste heat recovery. The facility must not be dedicated to increasing the efficiency of fossil fuel heating or cooling systems. Storage systems connected to district heating networks must serve networks that meet or plan to meet the efficiency requirements of Directive 2012/27/EU.
DNSH: Climate Change Adaptation
The activity complies with the criteria set out in Appendix A of the Delegated Act. A climate risk and vulnerability assessment proportionate to the scale of the activity has been carried out, and adaptation solutions are implemented to address identified risks.
DNSH: Water and Marine Resources
The activity does not lead to the deterioration of the good status of bodies of water and complies with Directive 2000/60/EC. For underground thermal energy storage (UTES), impacts on groundwater temperature, quality, and flow are assessed and managed to prevent deterioration of groundwater bodies.
DNSH: Circular Economy
The activity assesses the availability of and, where feasible, adopts techniques that support reuse and recycling of storage materials. Phase change materials and thermal fluids are selected for recyclability and low environmental impact at end of life. A waste management plan is in place.
DNSH: Pollution Prevention
The activity does not involve the use of substances listed in Annex I or II of Regulation (EU) 2019/1021. Storage media and heat transfer fluids are managed to prevent leaks and environmental contamination, complying with REACH Regulation (EC) 1907/2006.
