Collection and Transport of Non-Hazardous Waste in Source Segregated Fractions

Separate collection and transport of non-hazardous waste streams to enable high-quality recycling and material recovery.

Substantial Contribution to Climate Change Mitigation

The activity must provide separate collection of non-hazardous waste in at least the following fractions: paper and cardboard, glass, metals, plastics, bio-waste, and textiles. Collected waste must be delivered to preparation for re-use or recycling operations, with at least 50% of the collected material by weight being sent to high-quality recycling (excluding energy recovery or backfilling).

Transport operations must use vehicles meeting at least Euro VI emission standards, or zero-emission vehicles for urban collection routes. Route optimisation through digital tools must be implemented to minimise fuel consumption per tonne of waste collected.

Substantial Contribution to Circular Economy

The collection system must achieve a source-segregation capture rate above 70% for targeted materials within the service area. Collection infrastructure must include accessible drop-off points and door-to-door collection for at least three waste fractions. Quality standards for collected fractions must be defined and monitored to ensure suitability for high-quality recycling.

A climate risk assessment must cover disruption risks from extreme weather events (flooding of collection points, heat impacts on bio-waste quality, storm-related access issues). Contingency plans must be in place for service continuity.

Collection points and transfer stations must be designed to prevent leachate from contaminating surface or groundwater. Bio-waste collection containers must be sealed to prevent liquid runoff.

Collection vehicles must comply with applicable emission standards. Transfer stations must control dust, odour, and noise. Litter from collection operations must be minimised through proper container design and handling procedures.

DNSH: Biodiversity and Ecosystems

Collection infrastructure siting must avoid protected areas and must not fragment habitats. Transfer station locations must comply with relevant environmental impact assessments.
