Sports Activities and Amusement and Recreation Activities

Operation of sports facilities, amusement parks and recreation venues with energy-efficient infrastructure and climate adaptation measures.

Substantial Contribution to Climate Change Mitigation

Sports and recreation facilities must implement energy management systems and achieve energy performance meeting at least the EPBD minimum requirements for the building type, or demonstrate a 30% reduction in energy consumption compared to the facility baseline. Indoor facilities must use high-efficiency HVAC systems, LED lighting with occupancy sensors, and building envelope improvements.

Swimming pools and ice rinks must implement heat recovery systems. At least 80% of electricity must be sourced from renewable sources. Outdoor facilities must minimise energy consumption for lighting and maintenance equipment, transitioning to electric-powered maintenance vehicles and equipment. The facility must publish annual energy and carbon performance data.

Major sporting events must implement a carbon management plan covering venue energy, spectator transport, catering, and waste. Low-carbon transport options (public transit access, cycling infrastructure, EV charging) must be available for spectators.

Substantial Contribution to Climate Change Adaptation

A CRVA per Appendix A must address heat stress impacts on athletes and spectators, flood risk to facilities, water scarcity impacts on pitch and course maintenance, and changes in snow and ice conditions for winter sports. Adaptation measures must be integrated into facility design and event planning.

DNSH: Climate Change Adaptation

Physical climate hazards must be assessed per Appendix A. Facilities must incorporate heat management for spectators and participants, flood protection for critical infrastructure, and contingency plans for extreme weather events.

DNSH: Water and Marine Resources

Facilities must implement water efficiency measures including smart irrigation for playing surfaces, rainwater harvesting, and water recycling for non-potable uses. Swimming pool water treatment must minimise chemical use and water waste. The facility must not abstract water from stressed sources.

DNSH: Circular Economy

Facility construction and renovation must achieve at least 70% recycling of non-hazardous construction waste. Event waste management must include comprehensive segregation and recycling programmes. Single-use plastics must be eliminated from venue catering and retail operations.

DNSH: Biodiversity and Ecosystems

Facility grounds must incorporate biodiversity-supporting features such as native planting, wildlife corridors, and pollinator habitats. Turf management must minimise pesticide use and follow integrated pest management practices. Artificial lighting must be designed to minimise light pollution impacts on nocturnal wildlife.
